LAVA LAMP

Experiment 2

After the child has explored the materials and has an understanding of how oil and water work, the child can now be given an opportunity to challenge themselves. What about creating their very own lava lamp? This experiment tends to be a little more teacher directed, although it will still give them the opportunity to explore and express their interest.
What you will need:
  • empty water bottle
  • food colouring
  • vegetable oil
  • water
  • table salt
  • sparkles/glitter
  • flash light
What you need to do:
  1. Get a clear glass jar.
  2. Fill 3/4's of the jar with vegetable oil.
  3. Add water to fill the remainder of the jar.
  4. Allow the child to put a few drops of food colouring (the choice of their colour).
  5. Add a pinch or 2 or table salt.
  6. Shine a flashlight behind the lava lamp and watch it glow!
This experiment will enhance the child's ability to "demonstrate, through investigation, an awareness of non-standard measuring devices." (FDEL-KP, 2010-11. pg. 104)
