For those that are new scientist and explores of oil and water you should know that there are many interesting facts to be aware of, for example; that the two do not mix.
Think of this; have you ever noticed that the oil from a boat sit's on the surface of the water? Ever asked yourself why? It's simple, it is because water is heavier than oil so when the two mix, oil tends to rise to the surface while the water sinks to the bottom. The molecules of both liquids tend to stick together rather than mix even when shaken.
Allowing children to experiment with oil and water gives them the opportunity to go through a variety of processes and physical explorations. While experimenting there is no right or wrong, children will pose many questions while making connections and problem solving. They will make observations as they develop new ideas through trial and error with the materials provided. For example; some may want to explore how food colouring mixes with either oil or water.
It is important to understand that science experiments and it's materials will be revisited many times. While children are revisiting the materials, it is the role of the educator to guide them by; asking open-ended and 'I wonder' type questions, being flexible and open minded, observing what they know, and gathering their interests.
*CHILDREN NEED TO BE ALLOWED TO MAKE MISTAKES! THAT IS HOW THEY LEARN!*
